Distribution transformer range is intended by engineers to bring transformation ranging from 11 kv to the level of the final distribution network. There is no need of impregnation under very high vacuum and vapour phase drying equipment. There are manufacturers who make small transformers as compared to those who make larger transformers range.

A distribution transformer can have lower ratings and higher ratings of 5000kva or more. This is why the use of kVA ratings to define types of transformer is not appreciated.

Transformer’s simple design and construction is the keynote throughout in relation to distribution transformer. Simple design is about in the methods of cutting and forming cores, by the diminishing number of individual plates required per lay by the use of single plates for the yokes instead of the two half-yoke plates as would likely be used for bigger transformer. The joints in the transformer are still mitered and engineers are widely using low-loss high permeability materials.

Users do not have to face problems with clearances from leads as the core frames are simplified.

Conductors designed for low-voltage windings were initially made from rectangular copper brass, which is known as strap. A substantial enhancement was made by engineers when they started using copper strip, which could be thinner than strap and has same width like coil. In early 1970s, engineers started using aluminium round wire in the primary windings. Today, distribution transformer manufacturers use both aluminium and copper conductors.

They flatten the wire into rectangular or oval shape in the winding process because it allows more conductors to be wound into a given size of coil and enhances the electrical and mechanical integrity of the coil.

Manufacturers are using enamel coating on the wire for high voltage windings today. They are also slowly replacing paper insulation with synthetic polymer coatings or synthetic cloth. Coming to coolants, they use mineral oil that surrounds a core-coil assembly and enhances the dielectric strength of the winding and avoids core oxidation. As the oil has greater electrical withstand than air and as the dielectric oil constant is closer to that of insulation, the dielectric enhancement occurs.
